Vera Lutter: Inspiring

 For my final project, I decided to use a DIY camera obscura that is about 2 by 3ft tall. With this camera, I was able to produce images on photo paper that mimic what a negative would look like or even a proof sheet. With that Vera Lutter became someone important in what it is I was trying to accomplish as a final project. 

Vera Lutter is a German artist who is based out of New York City. Lutter is best known for her work with the camera obscura as she produces architectural and industrial images of different sites all around the world. Her subject matters include urban centers, industrial landscapes, works of art, art spaces, historical monuments, and even areas of transit. Along with the camera obscura, Lutter has also worked with digital photography, sound installations and video projections. 

To create her camera obscura, Lutter turned her apartment into a giant camera by covering all the walls and creating a pin hole in for one light source to enter in. With that she would expose light on photo paper as large as her walls and this is how she started producing images that wasn't multiplied or reproduced. With her own camera obscura, Lutter was able to create large scale images. From what I understand, Lutter creates her own camera obscura in a closed places that allows for her to decide on the size of her images. Vera has been featured in many different places around the world such as New Orleans Museum of Art, Gagosian Gallery in both New York, Los Angeles, and London, and Museum of Contemporary Photography in Chicago for solo exhibitions. For group exhibitions, she was featured in places such as Photo London, National Gallery of Art, the MET, the Whitney Museum of Art, and even the Israel Museum.

Lutter has ultimately inspired this idea of creating your own camera in the space that you are in and capturing the image that the world entering through the camera hole onto the photo paper. I hope to one day create my own large scale images using the space in which I live in. I know the processing of the images will be a little of a hassle, but what will be the outcome will be greater than that!

John Dugdale

 John Dugdale is an American art photographer best known for his cyanotypes and platinum prints. John was born in Connecticut and by the age of 33 he was blind through a stroke and an HIV related illness called CMV retinitis, and was only able to have 20% of his vision. With this unfortunate outcome, Dugdale found that his career in commercial photography had ended but that opened up doors for him to tap into history and use techniques of fine art from the 19th century. Dugdale has since used large formatted cameras to produce cyanotypes and platinum prints through the use of the albumen process. Annie Leibovitz

Annie Leibovitz is an American photographer who is best known for her intimate, engaging, and dramatic portraits of celebrities. More than that, she is a creative designer, talented eye, and an icon in the field she is in. She is considered a living legend and has truly lived up to this title. An inspiration to so many, Annie Leibovitz has definitely played a role in how I see photography and skills embodied when capturing the pieces and images wanted.  In 1970, Leibovitz started working for Rolling Stone and in 1973, at the age of 23, she became the first woman to be named chief photographer of Rolling Stone and she did that for the next 10 years.
